No discussion of hell and life’s myriad temptations would be complete without at least mentioning Hieronymus Bosch’s mind-bogglingly awesome triptych, The Garden of Earthly Delights.

Take a good long look at this high-resolution image of the painting and then consider that it was created all the way back between 1490 and 1510.  

The center panel, which you see at the top here, depicts lots of deliriously happy naked people cavorting around fantastical animals, oversized fruit, and hybrid stone formations. It all looks like lots of fun until you take a look at the image below that, which is a detail view of the right panel, Bosch’s vision of the wicked hellscape full of the torments awaiting all those people who were so happily cavorting earlier.

That’s right, first you get to prance around naked with giant birds and then the giant birds break out their awesome furniture and devour you.
