The days have grown cold and short, Lovecraftian Solstice Carols can be heard on the wind, and in the Portland, OR home of Maika, co-editor of the Geyser of Awesome, the spot on the living room floor where betentacled trees have stood in years past has suddenly begun to darken and roil. Cthulhumas approaches and it’s time to pay tribute.

Dread Cthulhu still waits dreaming, but this year the Cthulhumas tree awoke. Its eyes are a pair of Giant Christmas Tree Googly Eyes that were altered with spray paint, paint pens, and markers. The wings were made using wire hangers, floral wire and tape, green cellophane, and the helpful guidance of a wing-making Instructable created by mercifulmaenad. Small sacrifices of blood, skin, and cherished cloth were made in the process and eldritch incantations were murmured.

Now the tree watches, unblinking. Sometime, just of the corner of an eye, the blue lights flicker and its tentacles appear to writhe. In the middle of the night the soft rustling of cellophane wings has been heard. The tree never sleeps.

Merry Cthulhumas friends. May the deep dark sleep of the Great Old Ones continue undisturbed.

It was around this time last year that Maika, co-editor of the Geyser of Awesome, created her first Cthulhumas tree using a bunch of our Chtulhu tentacles, blue string lights, silver garland, a plush Cthulhu, and just the right amount of eldritch chanting.

Knowing the Great Old Ones would be expecting a tribute at least as nice as last year’s effort, Maika created a second Cthulhumas tree this year, building on the original design with the addition of more lights, three dozen Finger Tentacles, and some Terrified B-Movie Victims.

Don’t leave small pets or children alone around this tree. Those frightened little figures won’t satisfy it for long.

Merry Cthulhumas one and all. May the Elder Gods continue to sleep soundly.

Cuttlefish photographed by Eric Hill Squirt Cuttlefish at Archie McPhee

We love cuttlefish. These amazing cephalopods can rapidly alter their skin colour at will, their awesome and sophisticated eyes have w-shaped pupils and no blind spot, and they have one of the largest brain-to-body size ratios of all invertebrates.

Cute + Smart + Tentacles = Awesome

The handsome fellow pictured in the top photo was photographed by Eric Hill at the New England Aquarium. Beneath that you can see an small army of the cute and feisty squirt cuttlefish that are available at the Archie McPhee store in Seattle.

It’s International Cephalopod Awareness Day on Geyser of Awesome!
