This awesome mural is the work of Waone, half of the Ukranian street art duo known as Interesni Kazki (previously featured here), and Seth Globepainter. The calligraphic work was done by Viktoria and Vitalina Lopukhiny. The artists collaborated to create this amazing piece at the Kyiv Mohyla Academy in Kiev, Ukraine. They titled the mural “Vita sine litteris mors est” which means “Life without literature is death.”

We recently posted about an artist named Joebot who created a wonderful series of mock covers for Little Golden Books based on video games. Thanks to Laughing Squid we’ve learned that another artist has done something similarly awesome, but with a completely different flavour:

Australian illustrator DrFaustusAU (previously featured here) created an awesome series of video game-themed book covers in the style of Dr. Seuss: Under the Sea with Mister B! for BioShock, Some Time to Kill in Silent Hill! ” for Silent Hill, and “If I was Dovahkiin” for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

We have fond memories of reading all sorts of Little Golden Books when we were little. In fact, they were among the very first books we remember being able to read all by ourselves, which is a pretty awesome moment in anyone’s life.

Joebot, a freelance illustrator and designer located in La Verne, CA, created an incredibly pleasing little series of mock covers for Little Golden Books about three great video games: “Me and My Big Daddy” for BioShock, “The Cake is a Lie” for Portal, and “The Littlest Dragonborn” for Skyrim.

What’s more, Joebot has an Etsy shop where you can purchase prints of these wonderful pieces either individually or as a complete set.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by Jodi Harvey-Brown The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Jodi Harvey-Brown Star Wars Heir to the Empire by Jodi Harvey-Brown Bambi by Jodi Harvey-Brown

Artist Jodi Harvey-Brown transforms books into elaborate sculptures depicting characters and scenes from the stories printed on their pages. It’s as though the stories are literally emerging from the books.

“Every scene is handmade and Harvey-Brown protects the final product with a UV finish. Her pieces feature every kind of story imaginable, including the Millennium Falcon ready to soar out of the pages of Star Wars Heir to the Empire; Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn sailing along the surface of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; and Harry Potter, Hermione, and Ron standing, wands posed, atop The Deathly Hollows.”

Jodi Harvey-Brown recently created a series of Christmas tree book sculptures available via her Etsy shop.

These wonderfully warped bookshelves look like something you might encounter inside the enchanted halls of Hogwarts. They were created by a design team based in Portland, Maine -  Linda and John Meyers, known collectively as Wary Meyers.

The winding book shelves, referred to as Twisted Tales, are a site-specific installation designed for the newly renovated offices of the VIA Advertising Agency, the old Baxter building, which had previously been the Portland, Maine public library from the late 19th century through the 1960s.

The Twisted Tales project page describes the installation as “A Shakespearean reference of the old library’s books “shuffling off this mortal coil”. The books, some of which were actually once in the library’s stacks, were gathered from local bookshops, then twisted and trimmed to fit flush against the paneled wall. There are whimsical, nostalgic Bedknobs and Broomsticks and Harry Potter-esque references also, since it looks magical, and it’s under the stairs.”

This wonderful image of an illustrated couple, stargazing on the pages of their own book, was created by artist Thomas Allen for his upcoming show, entitled Beautiful Evidence. The show opens on Sunday, September 9th at Foley Gallery in New York. Each photograph in the ehibit was made from six to ten overlapping exposures that were stitched together in Photoshop.
A collection of Thomas’s awesome artwork, Thomas Allen: Uncovered, is available via Amazon. He also designed the new covers for Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series of novels.

We’ve previously featured a variety of wonderful forms of book art, so we were delighted to happen upon the work of artist Kelly Campbell Berry. Kelly carefully transforms children’s books into intricate, one-of-a-kind sculptures. The books appear to have opened themselves up to each tell their own stories.

“I am truly amazed at the ability some people have to arrange words in such a way that we, the readers, can actually ‘see’ into the imagined world of the writer. We relate, feel, and become invested in the characters so deeply that we are pulled into their world for a brief moment of escape. In some cases I remember certain books with such fondness that I feel as it I experienced them. I still have a connection to Stewart Little and The Borrowers. Books, for me, come alive. That is why I have started creating book sculptures. My book sculptures are my way of showing what the words on the pages create in the imagination of the readers.

Kelly’s collaged book sculptures are available to purchase at her Etsy shop, Artful Living.

Alexander Korzer Robinson’s awesome book sculptures are made by working through a book, page by page, cutting around some of the illustrations while removing others. The images seen in the finished work, are left standing in their original place.

“Before Alexander begins to work on a new piece certain boundaries are predetermined through the literature in which he uses. Through his process he aims to transform the meaning of this preexisting material. The encyclopaedia becomes a window into an alternate world, much like lived reality becomes its alternate in remembered experience. These books, having been stripped of their utilitarian value by the passage of time, regain new purpose. They are no longer tools to learn about the world, but rather Alexander sees them as a means to gain insight into our memory process.”

We’ve posted about Guy Laramee’s awesome book sculptures before, so we were delighted to learn that he’s exhibiting some new pieces:

Artist Guy Laramee (previously) has recently completed a number of new sculptural works where he transforms thick tomes into incredible topographical features including mountains, caves, volcanoes, and even water. Many of the works are part of a new project titled Guan Yin, a series of work dedicated to the forces that enable individuals to endure grief and pain, or in his words “the mysterious forces thanks to which we can traverse ordeals.” If you happen to be near Quebec, a number of Laramee’s works are currently on view at Expression gallery in Saint-Hyacinthe through August 12.
